Sarphati Ethnography
The University of Amsterdam is working together with the GGD on a long-term study into how Amsterdam children aged 0 - 4 years and their parent(s) deal with eating, sleeping and exercise in practice. We conduct research into health practices and the relationship with inequality, trust and inclusion and exclusion in research and interventions. We also look at effects on the microbiome in the mouth and intestine. We also work together with a large number of colleagues at ACTA, at the Amsterdam UMC, in various other faculties, at Inholland and at a large number of other organizations.
Our research
The eating, sleeping and playing of little Amsterdammers: how does that work in practice?
The University of Amsterdam, together with the GGD, is conducting research into how Amsterdam children aged 0 – 4 years and their parent(s) deal with eating, sleeping and playing in practice. We would like to get in touch with expectant parents who are expecting their first child.
Why?
Much research has been done on young children, but little is known about their normal daily lives. Insight in this increases scientific knowledge and can help improve care for all Amsterdam residents in the long term.
Are you participating?
Then we would like to interview you during your pregnancy about your expectations of raising a child. After your child is born, we would like to hear about your experiences with how your child drinks, eats, sleeps and moves; what is difficult, what works well or not, and what your experiences are with the advice and opinions of others. The interview will last approximately one hour, at a time that is convenient for you. Preferably at home, but elsewhere is also possible. As a token of our appreciation, you will receive a €20 gift card per interview.
What you tell us in the interview remains anonymous and confidential. Participation is voluntary. We are not part of the midwifery practice or GGD, and if you do not participate, this will have no consequences for the care. If you want to participate and later change your mind, you can stop participating at any time.
We hope you will continue to participate. That is very valuable for our research. The parents we have already interviewed enjoyed talking about their child and reflecting on this. It shows you how quickly your child is changing. If you want, you can receive the transcript of the conversation after each interview.
